The Growing Demand for GWO Training in North America
In 2025, there was a distinct shift by owner/operators and manufacturers of wind turbine generators toward a more accountable training standard for technicians. While GWO training has long been a plus for technicians in practice, it has now become the de facto requirement for employment within the wind energy industry. This change in technician training requirements brings the North American industry in line with international standards.
With companies like NextEra, Orsted, GE, Vestas, and Siemens Gamesa leading the charge for a safer work environment, both experienced and aspiring technicians should heed the call. The demand for GWO certified technicians is on the rise. Let MCL Height Safety help you move forward.
Why Quality GWO Training Matters?
The wind generation industry by its very nature operates in remote areas, well away from the emergency services on which urban-setting jobs can rely.

This means the GWO training you receive needs to be reliable, informative, and practical to best prepare you for the career ahead.
At MCL Height Safety, our trainers have almost 20 years of collective experience delivering the GWO-accredited course curriculum, with a pass rate of over 90% in Canada. With over 50 years of combined instructional experience, our staff is dedicated to helping you succeed.
First Step: GWO Basic Safety Training (GWO BST) Modules

The GWO BST program is your entry point into the wind energy industry. In this comprehensive four-day GWO Basic Safety Training program, you will learn to use and practice with the equipment you’ll encounter in the field.
What Does GWO BST Training Include?
GWO Basic Safety Training consists of the following four essential modules:
1. GWO Fire Awareness
Learn how to identify potential fire hazards to prevent fires. Master putting out pre-flashover fires utilizing handheld extinguishers and fire blankets. Learn how to navigate the confines of a wind turbine nacelle with limited or low visibility.

2. GWO Manual Handling
Manual handling incidents are the second highest cause of injury when working in a wind turbine nacelle. This GWO BST module discusses how to properly prepare for and complete the physically demanding requirements of working within a wind turbine environment.

3. GWO First Aid
This first aid-oriented module provides the basics of first aid interventions with a focus on injuries related to the wind generation industry.

4. GWO Working at Height
This two-day module within the GWO Basic Safety Training covers everything from equipment selection to rescuing technicians in suspension.

Over an immersive two days GWO working at height session, candidates will be exposed to the most current and best-practice GWO standards for:
- Selection, inspection, and use of appropriate travel restraint and fall arrest equipment utilized by the wind generation industry
- Assessing and choosing safety anchorage wisely
- Fixed ladder climbing using various fall arrest systems and equipment
- Self-evacuation techniques from our 10-meter-tall training center
- Over-the-edge rescues—learn to rescue and lower a technician stranded in suspension over the side of a nacelle
- Fixed ladder rescues—learn several rescue techniques for retrieving technicians in suspension from fixed ladders
Next Steps After GWO BST: Advanced Training Options
With the prerequisite GWO Basic Safety Training (GWO BST) modules in hand, the next steps are up to you as a technician. MCL Height Safety offers two advanced pathways to further your career.
GWO Advanced Rescue Training (GWO ART) Module

For technicians seeking more advanced rescue techniques, the GWO ART program is your next step. GWO Advanced Rescue Training builds upon your GWO BST foundation with specialized skills.
What Does GWO ART Training Include?
The 3-day GWO Advanced Rescue training program covers:
- Advanced Rope Rescue Techniques – Learn to extract, package, and move injured technicians through nacelles, blades, hubs, hatchways, across decking, and between platforms of various heights utilizing advanced rope rescue techniques
- Emergency Response Skills – Gain the skills necessary to act efficiently and effectively during emergency situations
- Equipment Evaluation – Gain the skills required to evaluate the effectiveness of different types of equipment for different rescue scenarios and environments
GWO ART certification demonstrates your capability to handle complex rescue situations in wind turbine environments.
GWO Basic Technical Training (GWO BTT) Modules

For technicians seeking direct training on the tasks required for servicing and maintaining wind turbines, GWO BTT provides essential technical competencies. GWO Basic Technical Training is designed to give you hands-on experience with wind turbine systems.
What Does GWO BTT Training Include?
The 4-day GWO Basic Technical Training program consists of four specialized modules:
1. Mechanical Module
Learn how to identify and inspect bolted and welded connections, brake, yaw, cooling, and lubrication systems. Gain practical experience utilizing the required equipment to service these systems.
2. Electrical Module
Learn the risks and hazards associated with electrical systems within the industry. Learn to identify the functions of various electrical components and sensors. Learn to explain and interpret electrical diagrams while assembling the circuits described by these diagrams. Gain practical experience in testing and diagnostic techniques.
3. Hydraulic Module
Learn to explain the basics of hydraulic systems, including pumps, actuators, valves, accumulators, oil transfer components, and how to interpret hydraulic diagrams.
4. Bolt Tightening Module
Learn to carry out and complete generic bolt torquing and tensioning tasks while utilizing the specialized equipment required to do so.
GWO BTT certification prepares you for the technical demands of wind turbine maintenance and repair.
