If you’re considering a career in the wind energy industry, Global Wind Organization (GWO) Basic Safety Training (BST) is an important qualification to understand.

GWO training follows internationally recognized standards developed specifically for workers in the wind industry. Whether you complete your training in Canada, the United States, the UK, or another country, GWO training is based on the applicable global standard.

For Canadians looking to enter the wind industry—or experienced workers looking to transition into wind energy—GWO BST provides essential safety training for working in wind turbine environments.

What Is GWO Basic Safety Training?

GWO Basic Safety Training is designed to provide workers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely in the wind industry by providing modules in: industry specific First Aid, Working at Height, Manual Handling, and Fire Awareness.

Is GWO BST Different in Canada?

GWO training is based on global standards rather than separate Canadian versions.

  • This is an international certification that is recognized by the industry world wide as the base standard for wind turbine technicians.

It’s therefore important to check with your prospective employer to understand the complete list of qualifications required for your position.

Who Can Take GWO BST?

GWO BST is suitable for individuals aged 18 and over who are looking to enter or currently work in the wind industry.

Candidates may come from backgrounds including:

  • Oil and gas
  • Construction
  • Rope access
  • Industrial maintenance
  • Electrical and mechanical trades
  • Maritime and offshore work
  • Safety and industrial services
  • Other skilled trades
  • Recent graduates and career changers

You don’t necessarily need previous wind turbine experience to begin your GWO training journey.

What Are the Requirements for GWO BST?

Before registering for GWO BST, candidates should be prepared to meet the requirements of the applicable GWO standard and training provider.

WINDA ID

A WINDA ID is an important part of the GWO training process.

WINDA is the GWO database used to manage and verify GWO training records. Participants should create their WINDA profile and obtain their WINDA ID before attending training.

You can register for a WINDA ID through the official GWO WINDA system.

Medical and Physical Fitness

GWO BST includes practical exercises designed to simulate situations workers may encounter in the wind industry.

Participants must be physically capable of safely performing and actively participating in the practical activities required as part of these modules.

Depending on the training, this may include activities involving:

  • Working at height
  • Emergency response
  • Manual handling
  • First aid
  • Fire response

If you have concerns about your ability to safely participate in practical training, contact your training provider before booking.

English Language Ability

Candidates should also be able to understand the language used during training.

Course instructions, safety briefings, learning materials and assessments may require participants to understand and communicate effectively in English.

If English is not your first language, it’s a good idea to confirm language requirements with your training provider before registering.

What Does GWO BST Cover?

The GWO BST pathway includes several important safety disciplines.

Working at Height

Working at Height training focuses on the knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely at height in wind turbine environments.

First Aid

Participants learn how to respond to emergencies and provide appropriate first aid solutions to industry related issues until additional medical assistance is available.

Manual Handling

This module focuses on safer manual-handling techniques and reducing the risk of injury when handling loads and equipment.

Fire Awareness

Participants learn about fire hazards, prevention and appropriate emergency responses in wind-industry environments.

The modules required for you will depend on your intended role and employer requirements.

Is GWO BST a Canadian Certification?

GWO BST is an international wind-industry training standard, not a provincial occupational health and safety certificate.

As a result, completing GWO BST does not necessarily replace other safety training required by your employer or provincial regulations.

How Long Is GWO Training Valid?

GWO training records are managed through the WINDA system, and individual training records have applicable validity periods.

Training certifications are required to be kept current and will if expired require a full suite of training to revalidate. However, if revalidation training is undertaken prior to validity period of 3 years then Refresher training can be conducted instead at a reduced price and a reduced time commitment

Because GWO standards can be updated, candidates should always check their current WINDA record and the latest GWO requirements when planning refresher training.

Why Choose a GWO-Certified Training Provider?

Choosing a certified provider ensures your GWO Basic Safety Training meets the required industry standard. When selecting a training provider, make sure the organization is GWO certified for the training you need.

A certified GWO training provider should be able to help you understand:

  • Which GWO modules you need
  • Course prerequisites
  • Upcoming course dates
  • WINDA registration
  • Training requirements
  • Additional certifications you may need for your target job

Choosing a certified training provider like MCL Height Safety ensures you are receiving the required standard of training in an environment well suited to meet your learning needs.
